The mountains of Southern New Mexico are already ablaze with color, and the resort town of Ruidoso will celebrate this change in seasons with the 31st annual Ruidoso Oktoberfest Friday and Saturday (October 19-20, 2012) at the Ruidoso Convention Center.
A favorite of the kids, the “Kinderhall,” offers games, prizes, and pumpkin painting. More than 40 arts and crafts booths will feature local and regional talents, while others will offer imported German beer and authentic German food, including bratwurst (with sauerkraut), knockwurst (with sauerkraut), Polish sausage (with sauerkraut), Reuben Sandwiches, red cabbage, potato salad, apple nut cake, Black Forest cake, potato pancakes, apple pancakes, apple sauce, caramel Apples, soft pretzels, German potato soup and many more tasty treats.
The world’s first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 as a wedding celebration for Bavaria’s King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. It didn’t take long for the fun loving Bavarians to replace the horse races, agricultural shows and other distractions with a focus on great beer, music, dancing and food.
The Albuquerque bands Swingshift and Die Polka Schlingel and Salzburger Echo from Sandy, Utah will get the crowds dancing; and authentic folk dance troupes will entertain the crowds when the featured bands take a break. Dance ensembles are the Ft. Bliss Schuhplattler and the Hellenic Dancers.
Tickets to the Ruidoso Oktoberfest for adults are $8 per day or $14 for two days. Tickets for ages 13-18 are $5; and children ages 12 and younger are free. Event hours are 5-11 p.m. Friday, and noon-11 p.m. Saturday.
Special Events Resource Group, a non-profit corporation formed to provide funds to benefit legitimate and recognized charities and fund education scholarships for the youth of Lincoln County, produces the Ruidoso Oktoberfest. Since its inception in 1999, the group has contributed more than $165,000 to Lincoln County charities, including over $70,000 in scholarships.
Each year, during the second full weekend in October, Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico plays host to the nation’s finest cowboy festival with old west storytellers, noted historians, poets, musicians (including the world famous Texas Playboys), chuckwagon cooks and competitions, chuckwagon cook-offs, western artists and craftsmen for three days of events, cowboy competitions, horse demonstrations, western swing dancing, kids rodeo and educational activities. In 1996, the symposium was selected as the Best Cowboy Cultural Event by the National Cowboy Symposium Association. Bank of the West supports Albuquerque’s vibrant community through International Balloon Fiesta
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., — With a growing national economy and possibly better weather than in 2011, the 2012 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta taking place October 6 – 14 could generate an economic impact of more than $100 million in direct and indirect spending, with significant benefits to Albuquerque’s local economy. An Economic Impact and Guest Research Study conducted in 2011 and 2009 showed that the Fiesta not only generated $90 and $106 million in direct spending those years, but that significantly more than half of those attending came from outside the region.
“This is good news for the local economy,” said Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West. “An event of this prominence attracts visitors from outside the region and generates the level of economic activity that contributes to local merchants and tourism, retail sales and – ultimately – job creation.”
“We’re pleased to support the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and the important economic contributions it brings to the people and businesses in our community,” said George Stanfield, executive vice president and head of the Southwest Division for Bank of the West. “At the same time, we’re proud to be associated with this incredible event that is known around the world. The Balloon Fiesta not only showcases the natural beauty of Albuquerque but also the hospitality and vibrant culture of our community.”
The nine-day Balloon Fiesta is the largest ballooning festival in the world, with attendance of approximately of three-quarters of a million visits. It features spectacular mass ballooning events that have been documented by media from over 50 countries and is known as the most photographed event in the world. The Fiesta also includes an annual ballooning “race” where participants compete in hydrogen-filled balloons to log the longest distance covered, often traveling more than 1,000 miles in two days.

The Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta is an annual five-day weekend of events featuring the culinary artistry found in Santa Fe, New Mexico’s many excellent restaurants coupled with the sophistication and wines of national wineries.
By bringing 90 national wineries to Santa Fe to partner with 75 of Santa Fe’s best restaurants, a five day schedule of food and wine events is created featuring cooking demos, wine seminars, winery luncheons and dinners. The weekend culminates with the Grand Tasting at the Santa Fe Opera where all 75 participating Santa Fe restaurants and all 90 wineries serve samples of their best food and wine.
One event, The SFWC Fiesta Live Auction raises money to sponsor Santa Fe restaurant community events. Proceeds from the live auction help sponsor culinary classes such as restaurant service classes, wine and cooking classes. As well the Live Auction helps sponsor other community events involving our restaurants and chefs such as Santa Fe’s Cooking with Kids program and Santa Fe Restaurant Week.
By reinvesting resources and education into the Santa Fe restaurant community, we serve our mission of the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta – keeping Santa Fe on the map as a world-class culinary destination.
This year will mark the 41st time that the Balloon Fiesta has filled Albuquerque’s crystal blue skies. Still the premier international ballooning event powered by the perfect October climate and a phenomenon called the “Albuquerque Box,” (a combination of weather patterns and geographic landscape, the box allows balloonists to control and even retrace their adventure), this year the Balloon Fiesta Film Fest Presented by Comcast will provide collegiate filmmakers the opportunity to develop short films/digital videos featuring different aspects of the 2012 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
The place to be in October is at Balloon Fiesta Park. The 200 acres of grass and booths will be filled with balloons and vendors selling everything from traditional New Mexican food to balloon memorabilia. Each year balloon teams from around the world participate in the event and news coverage originates from more than 50 countries. It has become the most photographed event in the world.

The All American Futurity: The World’s Richest Quarter Horse Race
The Quarter Horse race that every owner, breeder, trainer and jockey wants to win is Ruidoso Downs’ signature event, the All American Futurity.
Run over 440 yards every Labor Day, the All American Futurity gained its lofty status through unique financial cooperation between the track and horsemen. Ruidoso Downs contributes “added money” to start the race’s purse, and then horse owners make payments to keep their young horses eligible. Many of these payments are made before the horse ever starts in a race.
This system made the All American Futurity the world’s first $1-million race for any breed of horse and enabled the All American to become the first $2-million race in Quarter Horse racing. Now the All American Futurity has a purse of $2.4 million and is the richest race for a two-year-old of any breed in North America. Read more and see more at the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack site!
Quarter Horse racing’s biggest races are on Labor Day weekend!
The $2,400,000 All American Futurity is on Labor Day and the $2,234,539 All American Derby is on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Over the past four centuries, a distinctive culture has evolved in New Mexico, an area described 400 years ago in the journal of Cabeza de Vaca as Una Tierra Tan Extraña…… A Land So Strange. The Hubbard Museum is proud to present its newest interpretive exhibit, A Land So Strange, which opens Saturday, June 16th, and runs through February 8, 2013.
As the State of New Mexico celebrates its 100th anniversary, A Land So Strange was created and designed by Curator of Exhibits, David Mandel and Curator of Collections, Adele Karolik, to provide a unique and educational journey through nearly 400 years of New Mexico history. With hundreds of artifacts and images from the 16th century to the 20th century, the exhibit tells the story of the Native Americans, the Spanish, and the Euro-Americans who created the New Mexico we experience today.
Take a closer look at materials drawn from collections around the nation that represent these separate cultures at Ruidoso Downs’ The Hubbard Museum, just minutes from Vera Cruz Mountain Ranch.
