The mountains of Southern New Mexico are already ablaze with color, and the resort town of Ruidoso will celebrate this change in seasons with the 31st annual Ruidoso Oktoberfest Friday and Saturday (October 19-20, 2012) at the Ruidoso Convention Center.
A favorite of the kids, the “Kinderhall,” offers games, prizes, and pumpkin painting. More than 40 arts and crafts booths will feature local and regional talents, while others will offer imported German beer and authentic German food, including bratwurst (with sauerkraut), knockwurst (with sauerkraut), Polish sausage (with sauerkraut), Reuben Sandwiches, red cabbage, potato salad, apple nut cake, Black Forest cake, potato pancakes, apple pancakes, apple sauce, caramel Apples, soft pretzels, German potato soup and many more tasty treats.
The world’s first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 as a wedding celebration for Bavaria’s King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. It didn’t take long for the fun loving Bavarians to replace the horse races, agricultural shows and other distractions with a focus on great beer, music, dancing and food.
The Albuquerque bands Swingshift and Die Polka Schlingel and Salzburger Echo from Sandy, Utah will get the crowds dancing; and authentic folk dance troupes will entertain the crowds when the featured bands take a break. Dance ensembles are the Ft. Bliss Schuhplattler and the Hellenic Dancers.
Tickets to the Ruidoso Oktoberfest for adults are $8 per day or $14 for two days. Tickets for ages 13-18 are $5; and children ages 12 and younger are free. Event hours are 5-11 p.m. Friday, and noon-11 p.m. Saturday.
Special Events Resource Group, a non-profit corporation formed to provide funds to benefit legitimate and recognized charities and fund education scholarships for the youth of Lincoln County, produces the Ruidoso Oktoberfest. Since its inception in 1999, the group has contributed more than $165,000 to Lincoln County charities, including over $70,000 in scholarships.
