Tall Tales of the Wild West: The Stories of Karl May

Open November 18, 2012 through February 9, 2014 at The New Mexico History Museum in the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, this exhibition gives visitors a unique view of one of the most iconic writers of the Wild West: Karl May.

The novels of German author Karl May served as trail guides to the mystique of the American West and even today are celebrated in European festivals and theme parks. His books have outsold those of Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey combined and were beloved by the likes of Albert Einstein, Herman Hesse, Fritz Lang, and Franz Kafka.

But there’s a hitch: May never visited the West. Nevertheless, his faith in the land of cowboys and Indians nurtured an entire continent’s love for it. From Nov. 18, 2012, to Feb. 9, 2014, the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors celebrates May’s life, legacy and lasting impact in an original exhibition, Tall Tales of the Wild West: The Stories of Karl May.

Curated by Tomas Jaehn, librarian for the Fray Angélico Chávez History Library at the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors, this small, original exhibition in the Mezzanine Gallery includes first-edition and foreign-language versions of May’s books, along with photographs illustrating his life. On loan from the Karl May Museum is Silberbüchse, Winnetou’s name for his rifle. May (whose name rhymes, perhaps fittingly, with “lie”) said he took the weapon from the Indian’s grave in Wyoming for safekeeping. In fact, the rifle was manufactured in Radebeul as a nonworking prop. Its visit to the exhibition will mark the first time it has been seen in the land where it was purportedly made.

Opening event and lecture series

At 2 pm on Sunday, Nov. 18, an opening reception for Tale Tales of the Wild West: The Stories of Karl May will feature a lecture by Hans Grunert, curator of the Karl May Museum in Radebeul, Germany, in the History Museum Auditorium. The Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico will serve light refreshments at 3 pm in the lobby. Invited guests include Klaus-Jochen Guehlcke, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Houston, Texas, and Stephan Helgesen, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

All of the exhibition’s lectures are free with admission (Sundays free to NM residents and Friday evenings free to everyone). Each lecture is in the History Museum Auditorium:

Sunday Nov. 18, 2 pm: “Karl May’s Wild West,” by Hans Grunert, curator, Karl May Museum, Radebeul, Germany. Refreshments following.

Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, 6 pm: “Karl May and Beyond: Indian Hobbyists in 20th-Century Germany,” by Birgit Hans, professor of Indian studies, University of North Dakota.

Friday, June 14, 2013, 6 pm: “Karl May’s Winnetou: Imagining the Noble Savage in 19th- and 20th-Century Germany,” by Michael Wala, professor of North American history, University of Bochum, Germany.

Verizon Wireless Completes Purchase of Southeastern New Mexico Rural Market

Verizon Wireless announced today it has completed its purchase of wireless assets in New Mexico RSA #6, owned by E.N.M.R. Telephone Cooperative and its subsidiary Plateau Telecommunications and operated under the brand name Plateau Wireless.  The purchase will expand Verizon Wireless’ brand and network footprint in southeastern New Mexico to the counties of Eddy, Chaves, Lea, Otero and a portion of Lincoln that it doesn’t currently serve.  Financial terms are not being disclosed.

The purchase includes Plateau Wireless’ Cellular, PCS and AWS spectrum covering the market, as well as customers and related GSM operations.  The licenses and the operating assets being acquired cover a population of 259,000 and approximately 26,100 square miles, including state highways U.S. 285, U.S. 54 and U.S. 70.  Major population centers include Roswell, Carlsbad, Artesia and Hobbs, N.M.

Verizon Wireless will convert the Plateau Wireless GSM network to CDMA for voice service; and EV-DO (3G) and 4G LTE for data services.  Verizon Wireless will serve acquired Plateau Wireless customers, using the existing Plateau Wireless brand name, until the network conversion is complete in 2013.  At that time, Plateau Wireless customers will receive a letter from Verizon Wireless explaining their service transition.

“We are excited to expand our presence and coverage in rural New Mexico and to welcome Plateau Wireless’ customers to the nation’s most reliable network.  We believe the strength of our network enables people to live better and stronger lives,” said Andres Irlando, president, Southwest Region, for Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $70 billion – more than $6 billion on average every year – since its inception to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network, including the building and rapid expansion of its 4G LTE network, which currently is available to more than 75 percent of the U.S. population.

Location: Ruidoso Convention Center
Ruidoso, New Mexico

The mountains of Southern New Mexico are already ablaze with color, and the resort town of Ruidoso will celebrate this change in seasons with the 31st annual Ruidoso Oktoberfest Friday and Saturday (October 19-20, 2012) at the Ruidoso Convention Center.

A favorite of the kids, the “Kinderhall,” offers games, prizes, and pumpkin painting.  More than 40 arts and crafts booths will feature local and regional talents, while others will offer imported German beer and authentic German food, including bratwurst (with sauerkraut), knockwurst (with sauerkraut), Polish sausage (with sauerkraut), Reuben Sandwiches, red cabbage, potato salad, apple nut cake, Black Forest cake, potato pancakes, apple pancakes, apple sauce, caramel Apples, soft pretzels, German potato soup and many more tasty treats.

The world’s first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 as a wedding celebration for Bavaria’s King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. It didn’t take long for the fun loving Bavarians to replace the horse races, agricultural shows and other distractions with a focus on great beer, music, dancing and food.

The Albuquerque bands Swingshift and Die Polka Schlingel and Salzburger Echo from Sandy, Utah will get the crowds dancing; and authentic folk dance troupes will entertain the crowds when the featured bands take a break. Dance ensembles are the Ft. Bliss Schuhplattler and the Hellenic Dancers.

Tickets to the Ruidoso Oktoberfest for adults are $8 per day or $14 for two days.  Tickets for ages 13-18 are $5; and children ages 12 and younger are free. Event hours are 5-11 p.m. Friday, and noon-11 p.m. Saturday.

Special Events Resource Group, a non-profit corporation formed to provide funds to benefit legitimate and recognized charities and fund education scholarships for the youth of Lincoln County, produces the Ruidoso Oktoberfest. Since its inception in 1999, the group has contributed more than $165,000 to Lincoln County charities, including over $70,000 in scholarships.

World’s Most Photographed Event Brings Beauty and Benefit to Local Economy

Bank of the West supports Albuquerque’s vibrant community through International Balloon Fiesta

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.,  — With a growing national economy and possibly better weather than in 2011, the 2012 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta taking place October 6 – 14 could generate an economic impact of more than $100 million in direct and indirect spending, with significant benefits to Albuquerque’s local economy. An Economic Impact and Guest Research Study conducted in 2011 and 2009 showed that the Fiesta not only generated $90 and $106 million in direct spending those years, but that significantly more than half of those attending came from outside the region.

“This is good news for the local economy,” said Scott Anderson, chief economist at Bank of the West. “An event of this prominence attracts visitors from outside the region and generates the level of economic activity that contributes to local merchants and tourism, retail sales and – ultimately – job creation.”

Bank of the West is in its second year as the official bank of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, marking over a decade of support for the event.

“We’re pleased to support the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and the important economic contributions it brings to the people and businesses in our community,” said George Stanfield, executive vice president and head of the Southwest Division for Bank of the West. “At the same time, we’re proud to be associated with this incredible event that is known around the world. The Balloon Fiesta not only showcases the natural beauty of Albuquerque but also the hospitality and vibrant culture of our community.”

The nine-day Balloon Fiesta is the largest ballooning festival in the world, with attendance of approximately of three-quarters of a million visits.  It features spectacular mass ballooning events that have been documented by media from over 50 countries and is known as the most photographed event in the world.  The Fiesta also includes an annual ballooning “race” where participants compete in hydrogen-filled balloons to log the longest distance covered, often traveling more than 1,000 miles in two days.

About Bank of the West
Founded in 1874, $62.7 billion-asset Bank of the West (www.bankofthewest.com), member FDIC and equal housing lender, offers a wide range of personal, commercial, wealth management and international banking services. 22nd Annual Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta Coming September 26 – 30, 2012

The Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta is an annual five-day weekend of events featuring the culinary artistry found in Santa Fe, New Mexico’s many excellent restaurants coupled with the sophistication and wines of national wineries.

By bringing 90 national wineries to Santa Fe to partner with 75 of Santa Fe’s best restaurants, a five day schedule of food and wine events is created featuring cooking demos, wine seminars, winery luncheons and dinners. The weekend culminates with the Grand Tasting at the Santa Fe Opera where all 75 participating Santa Fe restaurants and all 90 wineries serve samples of their best food and wine.

One event, The SFWC Fiesta Live Auction raises money to sponsor Santa Fe restaurant community events. Proceeds from the live auction help sponsor culinary classes such as restaurant service classes, wine and cooking classes. As well the Live Auction helps sponsor other community events involving our restaurants and chefs such as Santa Fe’s Cooking with Kids program and Santa Fe Restaurant Week.

By reinvesting resources and education into the Santa Fe restaurant community, we serve our mission of the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta – keeping Santa Fe on the map as a world-class culinary destination.

¡Buen provecho!
