JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU), New York’s Hometown Airline™, today launched New York’s only nonstop service to the vibrant city of Albuquerque. Dave Barger, JetBlue’s President and CEO, was joined today by Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry during the inaugural flight’s departure ceremony at Kennedy International Airport.

Albuquerque is JetBlue’s first destination in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, and is the 77th destination served in the airline’s growing route network. When you take all that into consideration, it makes absolute sense for JetBlue to fly here.”

“This is a huge step for Albuquerque that will add to our opportunities for business and leisure travel.  New York City is the largest market in the country and we now have non-stop service. This will make us more business, convention and tourist friendly, which is good news for us all,” Mayor Berry said. “JetBlue is a tremendous company and the city looks forward to a long-term partnership and additional growth opportunities with the airline.”

Magdalena Planning 2 Prescribed Burns week of April 22, 2013

MAGDALENA, NM –The Cibola National Forest and Grasslands’ Magdalena Ranger District is planning two prescribed burns to benefit wildlife habitat and to prevent the threat of potential wildfire. The burns will begin the week of April 22, 2013 and will continue until completed, depending on weather and vegetation conditions.

  • The 6,600-acre East Magdalena II burn is located 15 miles southeast of Magdalena, New Mexico and 20 miles southwest of Socorro, NM. The dominate vegetation is ponderosa pine, mix conifer and piñon/juniper with light to moderate grass cover.
  • The 2,300-acre Gallinas burn is located 13 miles northwest of Magdalena, New Mexico.  The dominate vegetation is piñon/juniper with light to moderate grass cover.

Prior to igniting of these two burns, the Magdalena Ranger District will ensure that there is a favorable weather forecast and that the required personnel and equipment are on hand. Fire management crews will monitor the burn for as long as necessary to ensure public safety.

During these prescribed burns, there may be delays when traveling on some of the following forest roads:

  • For the East Magdalena II burn, there may be some delays on Forest Roads (FR) 235, 235B and 406.
  • On the Gallinas burn delays may occur on Forest Roads 10, 10D, 10E and 12.

There will be additional fire vehicles patrolling and monitoring the area. Please drive carefully when on these roads, as visibility might be lower due to smoke. Use caution and drive with your headlights on. Smoke will be visible along US Highway 60 for both burns.

For more information contact the Magdalena Ranger District at 575-854-2281 or email cwolfe@fs.fed.us.

Yippekiyay! A Roundup of Cowboys Sashays into New Mexico Museums This Month

It’s a cowboy (and horses) round up at the Santa Fe state museums. Three lively exhibitions explore cowboys real and imagined, horses that changed the New Mexico landscape, and dazzling Indian saddle blankets.

When America needed hard workers, the cowboy was there. The job was dirty and difficult, low-paid and lowly regarded. But when an America torn by the Civil War needed a hero to unite its soul, the unassuming cowboy was an unlikely—and ultimately lasting—pick.

AT&T Speeds Things Up In Las Cruces With 4G LTE

AT&T INC. LOGO

Customers to benefit from nation’s fastest 4G LTE network on the latest devices

AT&T* has turned on the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network** in Las Cruces, bringing customers the latest generation of wireless network technology. Watch here to see several of the benefits AT&T 4G LTE provides, including:

  • Faster speeds. LTE technology is capable of delivering speeds faster than many other mobile Internet technologies***. Customers can stream, download, upload and game faster than ever before.
  • Cool new devices. AT&T offers several LTE-compatible devices, including new AT&T 4G LTE smartphones and tablets.
  • Faster response time. LTE technology offers lower latency, or the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file once you’ve sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming, two-way video calling and telemedicine.
  • More efficient use of spectrum. Wireless spectrum is a finite resource, and LTE uses spectrum more efficiently than other technologies, creating more space to carry data traffic and services and to deliver a better network experience.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Las Cruces responds to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, on the best devices,” said Adam Vital, AT&T Vice President and General Manager.

AT&T’s 4G Network

AT&T’s innovation and investment has resulted in the nation’s largest 4G network, covering 288 million people with ultra-fast speeds and a more consistent user experience. Our 4G LTE network delivered faster average download speeds than any of our competitors in PCWorld‘s most recent 13-market speed tests.

AT&T’s 4G LTE network delivers speeds faster than many other mobile Internet technologies, as well as multiple innovations that optimize the network for performance. Our network’s radio components are placed close to the antenna at most cell sites, instead of inside the base station, which helps minimize power loss between the base station and antenna and, in turn, improves the performance of our 4G LTE network. The network also is designed with its core elements distributed across the country, which helps reduce latency, or the delay when using the Internet, because your request isn’t traveling as far.

Even as AT&T continues to expand its 4G LTE coverage, customers can get 4G speeds outside of 4G LTE areas on our 4G HSPA+ network, unlike competitors, where smartphone customers fall back to slower 3G technologies when outside of LTE coverage.

AT&T’s focus to deliver the best possible mobile Internet experience goes beyond 4G to embrace additional connection technologies. AT&T operates the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network**** including more than 32,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at popular restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and provides access to more than 402,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn’t count against customers’ monthly wireless data plans.

AT&T also is a leading developer of Distributed Antenna Systems, which utilize multiple small antennas to maximize coverage and speed within stadiums, convention centers, office buildings, hotels and other areas where traditional coverage methods are challenging.

Over the past five years, AT&T invested nearly $98 billion into operations. Since 2008, AT&T has invested more capital into the U.S. economy than any other public company. In a July 2012 report, the Progressive Policy Institute ranked AT&T No. 1 on its list of U.S. “Investment Heroes.”

*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

** Limited 4G LTE availability in select markets. LTE is a trademark of ETSI. Claim based on a comparison of U.S. national carriers’ average 4G LTE download speeds for Android™ and Windows smartphones and iPhone 5. 4G speeds not available everywhere.

*** 4G LTE device and data plan required. Learn more about 4G LTE at att.com/network .

****A Wi-Fi enabled device required. Other restrictions apply. See www.attwifi.com for details and locations.

New Mexico Kids Will ‘Kick Butts’ on Wednesday, March 20

CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS LOGO

State Leaders Urged to Support Tobacco Prevention Initiatives

Kids in New Mexico will stand up against tobacco on March 20 as they join thousands of young people nationwide for the 18th annual Kick Butts Day. More than 1,200 events are planned across the United States. (See below for a list of local events.)

Organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and sponsored by United Health Foundation, Kick Butts Day is an annual celebration of youth leadership and activism in the fight against tobacco use. On Kick Butts Day, youth will encourage their peers to stay tobacco-free. They will also educate their communities about the dangers of tobacco and the tobacco industry’s harmful marketing practices.

This year on Kick Butts Day, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is highlighting the tobacco industry’s products and marketing that entice kids to use tobacco. According to the Federal Trade Commission, tobacco companies spend $8.5 billion a year – nearly $1 million each hour – to market cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products. This marketing has an impact on kids:

  • While the U.S. has greatly reduced youth smoking, 18.1 percent of high school students still smoke, and nearly 1,000 kids become regular smokers each day. Among youth smokers, 86 percent prefer Marlboro, Newport and Camel, which are the three most heavily advertised cigarette brands, according to the government’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
  • Tobacco companies have also introduced new products that appeal to kids, including cheap, sweet, colorfully-packaged small cigars that look just like cigarettes. Many cigars come in fruit and candy flavors such as strawberry, vanilla, peach and apple.
  • In a 2012 report, the U.S. Surgeon General concluded that tobacco marketing causes kids to start and continue using tobacco products.

“On Kick Butts Day, kids will stand up and reject Big Tobacco’s manipulative marketing,” said Matthew L. Myers, President of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. “It’s also a chance for elected leaders to commit to protecting kids from tobacco through policies such as tobacco taxes, smoke-free laws and prevention programs. We hope that legislators will listen to their young constituents and implement these proven solutions to reduce tobacco use and save lives.”

Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, killing more than 400,000 people and costing $96 billion in health care bills each year.

In New Mexico, tobacco use claims 2,100 lives and costs $461 million in health care bills each year. Currently, 19.9 percent of the state’s high school students smoke.

On Kick Butts Day, kids turn the tables on Big Tobacco with events that range from “They put WHAT in a cigarette!?” demonstrations to health fairs to rallies at state capitols. Activities in New Mexico include:

  • On March 20, students at Dennis Chavez Elementary School in Belen will learn what’s in a cigarette as well as the dangers of tobacco use as part of Kick Butts Day. Time: 4 PM. Location: 19560 Highway 314, Belen. Contact: Irene Lucero-Lovato (505) 269-6278.

For a full list of Kick Butts Day events in New Mexico, visit http://www.kickbuttsday.org/events. Additional information about tobacco, including state-by-state statistics, can be found at www.tobaccofreekids.org.
