Mary Mac’s: IT’S BACK!

Welcome back!

Good news for those who loved Mary Mac’s in Datil and were very sad to see it go… Here’s a “welcome back” letter from Ann and Parker:

I have been looking for a place to relocate Mary Mac’s Cafe since we closed in April.  And because “Good things come to those who wait….” – we have a new location for the restaurant!

As of November 1st – Mary Mac’s Cafe will be at the High Country Lodge in Magdalena.  We will offer a similar menu (almost the same) as our original menu and will include the best selling Parker omelet, quiche of the day, soup of the day, green chile philly sandwich, gluten free items, and CARAMEL BREAD PUDDING – our specialty!

New additions will include french fries, whole pizzas (we have a full size double pizza oven), steaks, prime rib, and DINNER specials. Hours of operation will be 7am-7pm daily except Sunday which will be 9am-5pm.  (Restaurant will be open at 8:30 am for coffee on Sunday and start serving at 9am)

We will continue to serve breakfast all day.  We will have awesome baked goods – muffins, pies and cakes.

We will add specials and try items requested by faithful customers and new Magdalena area customers, adding  to the menu items that are popular with our new customer base.

Dinner will be served 5pm-7pm.   Last order taken at 7pm.

A seven day a week venture with the long hours of operation will be quite a challenge but easier than we had to deal with in our previous location.  The casual dining room is larger, the kitchen is large and efficient and there is a very large dining room/meeting/banquet room with a fireplace and stage.  Dinner will be served in this room.

At this time I have a few openings for positions at the restaurant.  If you know of anyone interested in cook or wait staff positions,  please forward this email to them and have them email me a brief couple of paragraphs listing their qualifications and hours available to work.

More information coming.  Events calendar will include information on our “soft opening”.  If you are passing through Magdalena hope to see you!

Ann and Parker

Need we say more?

Annual Los Ranchos Art Studio Tour Benefits Art Education

The Village of Los Ranchos is hosting the second annual the Los Ranchos Art Studio Tour Saturday and Sunday (November 5-6, 2011), 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

The inaugural tour in 2010 featured 33 artists from around the Los Ranchos area who opened their homes and studios to thousands of visitors during the tour weekend. It was awarded an Honorable Mention as the Best New Event in New Mexico by the Tourism Association of New Mexico.

Participating artists will be working with Art Has Heart, a local foundation dedicated to providing fine arts educational programs and scholarships to students in Albuquerque and throughout the southwest. A portion of the sales at the preview gallery, as well as artists selling from their studios, will be donated to the Foundation, which has awarded more than 300 college scholarships and made financial contributions to art programs in schools and museums for the past 13 years.

Stop by the Los Ranchos Argi-Nature Center, 4920 Rio Grande Blvd., before you begin your tour for maps, information, and a tour preview.

NM Unemployment Below National Average

NM Flag

According the the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, New Mexico’s unemployment stood at 6.6%, far below the national average.

New Mexico

New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in August 2011, down from 6.7 percent in July and 8.5 percent a year ago. The national unemployment rate remained at 9.1 percent. The decline in New Mexico’s unemployment rate for August was the sixth in a series since the rate peaked at 8.7 percent at the start of the year. This drop was again the result of workers leaving the labor force rather than an increase in employment.

A preliminary analysis of unemployment data shows that if the labor force participation rate (LFPR) had remained steady at pre-recession levels of around 63 percent, the measured unemployment rate would have continued a slightly increasing trend in recent months instead of posting the sharp drop shown by the official numbers.

The rate of over-the-year job growth, comparing August 2011 with August 2010, was 0.8 percent, representing an increase of 6,500 jobs. We have now reported three straight months of over-the-year job growth, following a 32-month period of job losses. August data continued the improving trend with further gradual strengthening in many industries. Even though some industries are still holding on to previous losses, the extent of those losses is shrinking in many cases.

The recovery likely started a while back, but lack of significant momentum left the state’s job growth rate close to the zero line for over a year. A number of industries are now cautiously adding jobs, but there is still evidence of restraint and the recovery is slow. The current job situation includes seven growing and five declining industries, with one that is unchanged.

The educational & health services industry added 7,800 jobs, far more than for any other industry, growing at a 6.7 percent rate since this time last year. This industry seems to always do well, slowing down during recessions, but never turning negative and losing jobs. As the largest private-sector industry, educational & health services’ consistent growth provides stability for the economy as a whole. Retail trade has made a comeback from previous losses to now report 3,800 additional jobs, while wholesale trade posted gains of 1,500 jobs. The mining industry reported another gain, up 1,800 jobs, following 14 months of losses that ended in 2010. Earlier losses had been as high as 5,000 jobs.

The financial activities industry posted a gain of 2,200 jobs following three years of job losses that ended earlier this year.  Leisure & hospitality added 300 jobs, up 0.3 percent, while transportation, warehousing & utilities gained 200 jobs, up 0.9 percent.

The information industry reported employment levels that were unchanged from last year. This follows many months of reporting negative numbers.

The remaining four private-sector industries each recorded declining employment. The professional & business services industry reported employment that was down 6,100 jobs from last year. Construction was down 2,800 jobs over the year, which is especially disappointing when considering the jobs previously lost since 2008, and the miscellaneous other services category lost 500. The manufacturing industry reported employment levels that were down 100 jobs from last year, continuing the mixed performance from earlier this year and following previous steep losses. As the chart below shows, manufacturing employment has taken devastating losses over a sustained period.

Government employment registered a net decline of 1,600 jobs from the year-ago total, with job losses reported mainly at the local level. Local government employment dropped 4,100 jobs since this time last year, likely due to different seasonal trends. Federal employment was also down, but just by 100 jobs. State government reported 2,600 additional jobs compared to the same month a year ago.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Sets New World Record

Inaugural Day of 40th Balloon Fiesta Sets new Mark of 345 Hot Air Balloons

Hot Air Balloons, Albuquerque, Ektachrome by Scott Williams

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta again set the world record for most balloons launched in one hour, sending 345 hot air balloons into the sky from Balloon Fiesta Park during the opening day of Balloon Fiesta.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Inc. is seeking the world record for the greatest mass hot air balloon ascent in one hour from Guinness World Records.™

“There’s no better way to celebrate the 40th Balloon Fiesta than breaking a world record on our opening day,” said John Sena, President of the Board for the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. “It was a beautiful day and a signature moment for the world’s premier balloon event.”

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is no stranger to world records, in 2000 Balloon Fiesta set the same record by launching 329 balloons in one hour.

The 12th Lorraine World Air Balloon Festival in Chambley-Bussieres, France launched 343 hot air balloons in one hour, earlier in 2011.

Take Shelter: Living In Tornado Alley? Why Not Move To New Mexico?

According to CNNMoney,  “The tornado season of 2011 will go down as one of the most destructive and dangerous in U.S. history. More than 1,500 tornadoes were reported this year, exceeding the 10 year average of 1,300, according to the National Weather Service. Even worse: An estimated 550 people have been killed by tornadoes, roughly 10 times the average annual rate, according to Greg Carbin, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. And we haven’t even entered the storm-heavy months of October and November yet.” Click here for more…

Sales of storm shelters have skyrocketed, but… Have you considered moving to a safer state? Consider the lack of major natural disasters in New Mexico—and you might want to consider buying land in New Mexico and building a home you can feel safe in!

Right now, Southwest Properties and Hitching Post Land Co. have some excellent deals on home-ready building sites and gorgeous raw land with extras! Give your friendly Ranch Representative a call now!
