Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium: October 7-9, 2011

Each year, during the second full weekend in October, Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico plays host to the nation’s finest cowboy festival with old west storytellers, musicians (including the world famous Texas Playboys), chuckwagon cooks, chuckwagon cookoffs, western artists and craftsmen for three days of events, cowboy competitions, horse demonstrations, western swing dancing, kids rodeo and educational activities. In 1996, the symposium was selected as the Best Cowboy Cultural Event by the National Cowboy Symposium Association. In addition, the LCCS has been named one of North America’s top 100 events by the American Bus Association.

More than 1,500 tornadoes were reported this year, exceeding the 10 year average of 1,300, according to the National Weather Service. Even worse: An estimated 550 people have been killed by tornadoes, roughly 10 times the average annual rate, according to Greg Carbin, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. More Datil Doings… (Lots of stuff in October!)

Tuesday September 27th The San Augustin Water Coalition invites you to a talk by Dennis Inman, geologist, updating progress on the application to drill 37 wells to transfer 54,000 acre feet of water per year from the San Augustin basin in Catron County to the Rio Grande and points north.

Location – the Datil Community Center

4pm half hour social time, 4:30pm Dennis Inman will discuss Geology & Hydrology of the San Augustin Basin,  drawing on the previous work by Dr. Frank Titus and Daniel Blodgett.  We now have the well logs from the two wells drilled by the Augustin Plains, LLC.  There was a hydrocarbon well drilled by Sun Oil co. a number of years ago.  There are nearly a thousand water wells within the basin and with the number of pending wells there would be much more and Dennis will discuss what that means.  One other topic of discussion will be the uranium deposits in the northern slopes of the Datil Mountains.  The floor will be open to questions.  (From Carol Pittman)

World’s Largest Ballooning Event Takes to Skies October 1-9, 2011

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta celebrates its 40th event with 550 hot air balloons representing 20 countries and honoring the person who started it all in 1972 Sid Cutter, the founder and “Father of Fiesta”.

The 40th event will occur October 1-9, 2011 at Balloon Fiesta Park.  New this year will be the Sandia Resort and Casino $100,000 challenge, the richest active prize in ballooning.  It will test pilots’ skill and provide great visuals as competitors play an airborne version of ring toss, trying to connect with one of ten poles during the competitive flying events.

The mass ascensions will fill Albuquerque’s morning skies with 550 hot air balloons on October 1, 2, 8 and 9.  The 16th America’s Challenge Gas Balloon event, a cross country competition, and the popular Balloon Glows (featuring 200+ hot air balloons in static display flickering their burners at sunset and into dusk) will round out the first weekend’s evening events.

Opening day at Balloon Fiesta Park will also feature both a balloon version and airplane version of the “Missing Man Formation” balloon launch to honor the so-called “Father of Fiesta” Sid Cutter who passed away earlier this year.

The competitive flying starts on Monday of Balloon Fiesta week with pilots aiming to win the richest active prize in hot air ballooning in the Sandia Resort and Casino $100,000 Challenge.  Competitive flying will continue throughout the week, taking a break on Wednesday for the Flight of the Nation’s.  The Flight of the Nations will honor the 20 countries participating in the 40th event, as each flies their nation’s flags from Balloon Fiesta Park.

Flying pigs, a giant butterfly and other unique objects are among the 99 special shape balloons that will take to the skies for their own mass ascension and balloon glows on Thursday and Friday at Balloon Fiesta Park.  Additional Mass Ascensions and a Balloon Glow will be included in the final weekend.

SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to New Mexico Small Businesses Economically Impacted by the Las Conchas Wildfire

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is making low-interest working capital loans available to small businesses economically impacted by the Las Conchas Wildfire that occurred June 26 through August 3, 2011, SBA Administrator Karen G. Mills said today.  SBA acted under its own authority to declare a disaster following a request received on September 9 from Governor Susana Martinez.

The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in Los Alamos and Sandoval counties and the neighboring counties of Bernalillo, Cibola, McKinley, Rio Arriba, San Juan and Santa Fe.

“The U.S. Small Business Administration is strongly committed to providing the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist New Mexico’s small businesses with federal disaster loans.  We will be swift in our efforts to help these small businesses recover from the financial impacts of this disaster,” said Administrator Mills.

“Small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private, nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred,” said SBA’s New Mexico District Director John C. Woosley.

“These loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster’s impact.  Disaster loans can provide vital economic assistance to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing,” Woosley added.

Eligibility is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage.  These loans have an interest rate of 4 percent for small businesses and 3 percent for private, nonprofit organizations with terms up to 30 years, and are restricted to small businesses without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship.

Applicants may apply online using SBA’s secure Web site at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

The New Mexico Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is offering free, personalized counseling to help affected business owners in their recovery.  Business owners may contact the SBDC in Los Alamos from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, either by telephone at (505) 661-4803 or by visiting their office at 190 Central Park Square, Los Alamos, NM 87544.

For owners of these impacted small businesses, disaster loan information and applications are available from SBA by calling SBA at (800) 6592955, emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or visiting SBA’s Web site at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing may call (800) 877-8339.

The filing deadline to return economic injury applications is June 13, 2012 .

A word on the flea market in Datil – The Flea Market is doing very well and more and more people are coming to sell each week.  Pat Henry plans to have the flea market through September.  There is still time to de-clutter and sell some things.  Big things – furniture and useful items priced right sell quickly.  Each Saturday 8am-?  (Usually 12:30 or 1pm)  In front of the Datil Elementary School.  $3 donation goes to the school.  Come to shop or come to sell or both.  Walk on pavement while you shop and talk to neighbors.

Friday Sept 16th at 6 p.m. at the Quemado Senior Center there will be a meeting of the Catron County Historical Society. We will be very honored to have as our guest, Karl Laumbach, renowned Archaeologist, Author, and listed with Dona Ana Historical Society hall of fame, who will be sharing with us insights gained on the Albert Jennings Fountain murder mystery and the Spider Web Trail.   On February 1, 1896 Albert Jennings Fountain, a prominent attorney and politician, and his 8-year old son Henry were run off the road between White Sands and Las Cruces and presumably murdered. The bodies have never been found and the case remains New Mexico’s premier murder mystery. Mr. Laumbach sets the stage and will share insights gained after 26 years of tracking a very cold case.

September 16, 17,18-Annual cowboy shoot -3 miles west of Magdalena at mile marker 109. Watch for signs.  New this year will be a country/western bazaar with a lot of vendors selling quite a variety of items-all locally made. Starts at 9:00am each day.
