As summer cools down, the Village of Hatch heats up. Labor Day weekend heralds the annual Hatch Chile Festival, a two-day celebration of our world-famous crop. The festival attracts over 30,000 visitors from all over the United States, including such notables as the Food Network and the BBC. Festival goers can sample famed chile recipes, watch the crowning of the chile festival queen, or toss a horseshoe in celebration of our most famous crop. Come cook, come eat, come have some fun!

Started in 2003 by the owner of the Glenwood Trading Post, the event has grown in size, number of cooks and fun year after year.

In the past this event has attracted cooks from Glenwood, Cliff, Gila, Reserve, Albuquerque, Cuba, Las Cruces and Silver City and communities in Arizona. Everyone is welcome to enter, no matter where you call home.

Cooking categories will again be “Fancy Fixer,” “Camp Cookie,” and “Tenderfoot,” with submitted recipes and level of experience considered.  Cooks can register to do Single Pot or Three Pot dishes in these categories. (Three Pot consists of Main Dish, Bread, and Dessert.)  Winning cooks will share jackpot cash awards and specialty prizes, and all proceeds go to Glenwood’s Community Park!

When: Saturday, April 6, 2013, 9:00 a.m. to mid-afternoon

The fun starts in Santa Fe, where more than 50 restaurants will participate in the Sunday-to-Sunday culinary extravaganza, and several hotels will feature special Restaurant Week lodging packages.  It’s the perfect week for out-of-town food lovers to visit The City Different, and for New Mexicans to plan a long weekend of culinary pleasure in their own backyard.

The foodie extravaganza continues in Taos (March 3 – 10), and Albuquerque (March 10 – 17).  In addition to value-priced dinners and lunches, people can expand their epicurean horizons through daytime cooking demonstrations, classes, and wine & spirits tastings.

The Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta is an annual five-day weekend of events featuring the culinary artistry found in Santa Fe, New Mexico’s many excellent restaurants coupled with the sophistication and wines of national wineries.

By bringing 90 national wineries to Santa Fe to partner with 75 of Santa Fe’s best restaurants, a five day schedule of food and wine events is created featuring cooking demos, wine seminars, winery luncheons and dinners. The weekend culminates with the Grand Tasting at the Santa Fe Opera where all 75 participating Santa Fe restaurants and all 90 wineries serve samples of their best food and wine.

One event, The SFWC Fiesta Live Auction raises money to sponsor Santa Fe restaurant community events. Proceeds from the live auction help sponsor culinary classes such as restaurant service classes, wine and cooking classes. As well the Live Auction helps sponsor other community events involving our restaurants and chefs such as Santa Fe’s Cooking with Kids program and Santa Fe Restaurant Week.

By reinvesting resources and education into the Santa Fe restaurant community, we serve our mission of the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta – keeping Santa Fe on the map as a world-class culinary destination.

I have made the decision to close Mary Mac’s Cafe in Magdalena next month.   There have been problems with the building and ownership that are not being resolved.  We have a great staff and have been continually building a solid clientele which has made it hard for me to make this decision.

Thank you so much for supporting Mary Mac’s!  We will be open through Sunday, July 15th.  Regular hours, plenty of food through the Old Timer’s weekend. Hope you can stop by!  Daily specials, pies, and cakes.  Not to mention ICE CREAM!

This will be my last restaurant venture.  Everything restaurant related is for sale.  If you would like to see the list of items for sale when it is ready, please email me here. Nothing will leave until Monday, July 16th. This includes the map tables, antique display case, as well as the restaurant equipment and smallwares, both in use at Mary Mac’s and the items stored in Datil.

Celebrate the rich history of New Mexico Wines with the 20th Annual Southern New Mexico Wine Festival at the Southern New Mexico State Fairgrounds in Las Cruces. Samples wines from wineries around the state, shop vendors from all over the southwest, eat, listen to live music and attend sessions at the University of Wine to learn more about food and wine pairing.

The event is open all three days – Saturday, Sunday, Monday from noon – 6:00 pm. Ticket purchased is good for any one of those three days!
